IP smart toolkit to be launched in Chennai this week

This week, Bharat Joshi, British Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, will launch an Intellectual Property (IP) Smart Toolkit.

The toolkit is meant to enable an IP Smart approach to doing business in India. Indian and UK companies, entrepreneurs, researchers, SMEs and IP consultants will attend.

The IP toolkit and resource book is the outcome of research and study by Chennai-based IP Dome Strategy Advisors, under a grant from the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO). It aims to encourage a partnership between UK and Indian companies, informed and enhanced by IP and technology transfer.

The toolkit covers a range of themes: methodology, using data to suggest an early IP strategic approach, models based on market conditions, developing partnerships in IP development, reducing research costs, glocalisation and reverse innovation, drawing IP-led lessons from the market.

Bharat Joshi said:

IP remains an important challenge for companies operating in India. I’m pleased that we’ve developed this toolkit to help companies, in particular SMEs, navigate IP in India successfully, including in the examples of successful IP approaches”.

Andrew Davidson, Head of Global Cooperation and Development, UKIPO said:

I’m very pleased to see this toolkit launched today. We hear from a range of Indian and International companies that questions of technology transfer, licensing and brand protection can throw up a range of concerns. So IP Dome’s help in navigating those issues is well placed, valuable, and hugely supportive of the creative and innovative sectors.

Dr Anindya Sircar, former Associate Vice President and Head - IP Cell, Infosys, Bangalore, and Senior IP Consultant will deliver the keynote address. Dr Sircar will speak about UK-India bilateral trade and research partnerships and India’s economic growth in life sciences, manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and biotechnology. Ms Swapna Sundar, CEO of IP DOME will offer a presentation of the findings.

IP Dome Strategy Advisors, Chennai, supported this project with their expertise and provided mapping and statistics. Their associates, Giridhar & Sai Associates, Advocates, Chennai helped create legal resources for the toolkit. The toolkit allows companies to determine which IP strategy, or combination of strategies work best for themselves while obtaining further advice about particular requirements and decisions from their own IP or marketing consultant in customising their strategy. This toolkit does not offer legal advice or market advice, but highlights areas where companies may need legal or market expertise from professionals.

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) is the official UK government body responsible for intellectual property (IP) rights including patents, designs, trademarks and copyright. UKIPO operates and maintains a clear and accessible intellectual property system in the UK, which encourages innovation and helps the economy and society to benefit from knowledge and ideas. It helps people get the right type of protection for their creation or invention.
