Supporting British nationals through a modern and efficient service is one of the three priorities of the FCO. While most visits abroad are trouble-free, rape and sexual assault can and does happen to some British nationals abroad every year.

In 2012-2013, FCO staff in France supported ten British nationals who had been the victim of rape and sexual assault and 16 in 2011-2012 (Source: British Behaviour Abroad).

Rape and sexual assault can happen to women and men of all ages and backgrounds. It can be a very traumatic experience whenever and wherever it happens, made more difficult to deal with when it happens abroad.

Putting this information online ensures that information we provide over the phone, in person or by email is also accessible to those who are seeking information but who may not wish to contact us directly.

We continue to encourage British nationals who have been the victim of rape or sexual assault to contact us for assistance by phone or in person.
