HMS Lancaster docks at the Port of Lobito

Strengthening the UK and Angola partnership in defence

HMS Lancaster, one of the Royal Navy’s state of the art Type 23, Duke Class frigates berthed at the Port of Lobito between 4 and 8 October The full and varied programme for the visit included boarding training for Angolan marines; a maritime security discussion involving staff from the Lobito Naval College and HMS Lancaster; an outreach project in the local community); and a football match.

On the evening of Monday 5 October the Commanding Officer of the Ship, Commander Peter Laughton MBE , hosted a reception on board for senior Angolan partners across Government, business, culture and others. Guests included His Excellency the Mayor of Lobito.

The British Ambassador, His Excellency John Dennis also attended, and spoke of the strength and breadth of the partnerships between the UK and Angola in defence ,business and many other areas. Over200 members of the public visited the Ship. The visitors took a tour of the upper deck and viewed the impressive systems on board, including one of the Royal Navy’s new Wildcat helicopters.
