Education and Professional Development Fair showcased all British Universities and awarding bodies present in Mauritius
The British High Commission held its first ‘UK Education and Professional Development Fair’ on Saturday 1 March 2014 at Talking Drums in Bagatelle. The event was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Mauritus Kailash Purryag, who hailed British higher education as among the best in the world. 20 British universities and awarding bodies present in Mauritius showcased the range of UK qualifications that can be currently acquired locally at a more affordable cost than in the UK, but at the same level of quality and standard. Prospective students and professionals looking to boost their careers with an advanced qualification met with representatives from these universities and awarding bodies who offered advice across a wide range of sectors and career paths.
The British High Commission supports the Government of Mauritius’ plan to transform Mauritius into an education hub and the UK Education and Professional Development Fair was linked to this initiative. The Knowledge Hub provides an ideal platform for British universities and awarding bodies to offer the same quality of courses to local and foreign students who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. It is estimated that 15000 students and professionals in Mauritius – a third of all higher education students - are currently working towards an UK qualification.
British High Commissioner Nick Leake said: “A British education is the best education in the world and it is now available in Mauritius. An authentic UK qualification is now affordable and within reach of students and professionals who are looking to advance along their career paths.”
In a recorded message, Foreign Office Minister for Africa Mark Simmonds said: “I am genuinely excited that innovation and new technology mean our world-class universities and colleges can for the first time offer exactly the same standard of education to African students, in Africa. Education has the power to transform lives. That is what British education in Mauritius will continue to do. And you can be part of that success.”
