English Law comes to the Russian regions
The British Consulate-General in Ekaterinburg and the British-Russian Law Association organised their fourth legal seminar in Russia
For the first time the seminar took place in a city where there is no UK diplomatic mission – in Ufa, capital of Bashkortostan Republic.
Five UK law practices took part in the event – Littleton, Simmons & Simmons, Swan Turton, Cozen O’Connor and Dentons. Together with the Russian legal company Dumler & Partners they spoke about contractual law and application of English and Russian law in commercial contracts. About 40 local legal specialists came to listen to and discuss the topic. Neil Semple, Consul General in Ekaterinburg welcomed the participants wishing them successful co-operation and saying a few striking facts about English law:
- English Law is used in 40% of all international transactions.
- Two thirds of all lawsuits heard in London’s leading commercial court since 2008 were brought by foreigners, reinforcing the city’s reputation as the venue of choice for “legal tourists”.
Following the success of the seminar Rupert D’Cruz, Honorary Secretary of BRLA commented that he plans to continue organising such seminars and hopes to return to Ufa next year.
