Embassy in Cairo denies allegations of giving money to MBs

The Embassy objects in the strongest possible terms to the completely fabricated reports of giving money to MBs.

The British Embassy in Cairo objects in the strongest possible terms to completely fabricated reports about a visit by embassy officials to the Nile Delta, including allegations that embassy officials provided money to Muslim Brotherhood activists. These allegations are completely untrue and represent a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation, with no basis in fact.

As set out in a press release sent out after the visit, two British diplomats visited the Delta region on 27 and 28 November to improve the embassy’s understanding of the situation in the region and to explore how the UK could support development there. The Egyptian government had full prior knowledge about the visit. The British diplomats met the Governors of Monofiya and Sharqia, as well as local political parties, and political movements. The Egyptian security forces provided a police escort throughout the entire visit. The diplomats engaged extensively with the media during the visit, holding a press conference for local journalists, giving TV interviews and tweeting.

The British Embassy in Cairo regularly conducts visits outside the main urban centres to deepen the UK’s understanding of Egypt. The UK also partners with NGOs and civil society organisations working throughout Egypt, with the full knowledge of the Egyptian government. These projects include £200,000 in support of the Egyptian Association for Marketing and Development’s project to improve the quality of government services provided to citizens in Minya and Menofiya.
