INFO SCREEN 1:

The purpose of this survey is to understand what people think about different types of emergencies and any steps people may have taken to prepare.

The survey is not being conducted because of any increase in the likelihood of a specific emergency happening. We are collecting this data to inform public advice and communications on this topic. There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions.

An ‘emergency’ can be defined as a large-scale incident that has a significant impact on health, life, property or environment and requires immediate action. An emergency could be deliberate or accidental, caused by human or environmental factors, and potentially turn into a serious situation that people sometimes call a ‘crisis’ or ‘disaster’. We use ‘emergency/disaster’ throughout this survey to mean any large-scale incident that could have significant impacts on health, life, property, or environment.

When answering the questions about ‘emergencies/disasters’, we would like you to think about this in terms of an event that could impact a number of people within an area, rather than an incident occurring to only one individual e.g. someone experiencing a heart attack or a car accident.

A household plan, one that you either create yourself or by using a template downloaded from a website e.g. from GOV.UK/Prepare. This would contain up-to- date information such as radio station frequencies, important phone numbers, meeting points for family/friends or a list of items you might need to take if you needed to leave your home quickly. 1
Some essential items that you would need to take if you had to leave your home quickly, e.g. copies of important documents such as birth certificates, insurance information, essential medication, spare phone charger, spare glasses. These would be stored in one place, such as in a cupboard or in a ‘grab bag’. 2
Some essential items needed for power cuts (e.g. torches, radio, important phone numbers) stored in one place, such as in a cupboard. 3
Important phone numbers or information (e.g. numbers of emergency contacts, your child’s school, 4
insurance company) written down on paper or in
hard copy (i.e. not on an electronic device).
A meeting point that you have agreed with family/friends for a situation where you are unable to contact them (such as when phones/mobiles/internet are not working). 5
Some items in your car that you would need if you were stranded somewhere (e.g. blankets, a torch, water/food, a reflective warning sign). 6 ONLY SHOW IF CAR = 1
