Safety in custody statistics cover deaths, self-harm and assaults in prison custody in England and Wales. This publication updates statistics on deaths to the end of December 2015 and assaults and self-harm up to September 2015.

The bulletin is released by the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and produced in accordance with arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Pre-release list

Safety in Custody statistics is produced and handled by MOJ analytical professionals and production staff. Pre-release access of up to 24 hours is granted to the following persons:

MOJ:

Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State; Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Minister for Prisons and Rehabilitation; Permanent Secretary; Director of Analytical Services; Criminal Justice Group - Offender Policy Team (x2); and relevant special advisors, press officers, and private secretaries.

National Offender Management Service (NOMS):

Director General, NOMS; NOMS Executive Management Committee; Deputy Director, Head of Planning and Analysis Group (PAG); Deputy Director, Equalities, Rights and Decency Group; Safer Custody Unit (x2).
