NTS mid-year estimates: Official Statistics in Development feedback

Published 25 April 2024

Applies to England

Development plan

A new statistical release titled National Travel Survey mid-year estimates: year ending June 2023 is intended to provide mid-year estimates of travel behaviours by residents of England travelling within Great Britain for the year ending June.

These mid-year estimates are being released on a trial basis in response to internal and external user demand, and will be focused on key indicators. They will show early indications of trends within headline findings in advance of the full annual publication which will be published in the summer of this year. The mid-year estimates are not intended to be a full release covering all of the data gathered within the National Travel Survey, as we consider a short release will achieve a balance between releasing more timely data and the resources required to do so.

These statistics are released under the ‘Official Statistics in Development’ label – formerly called Experimental Statistics. Official Statistics in Development are Official Statistics that are new or temporarily undergoing development and are being tested with users, in line with the standards of trustworthiness, quality, and value in the Code of Practice for Statistics.

User engagement: request for feedback

We would like to understand whether releasing these mid-year estimates is valuable to our users, and if we should continue to do so in future years. We are also interested in whether our users consider the amount of content and the format to be right.

This mid-year NTS release is intended to provide faster indicators for key statistics. It is not intended to be used to answer bespoke queries and the full NTS dataset will be used for these as normal. The mid-year NTS dataset will not be made available through the UK Data Service. The annual dataset is on the UK Data Service website and can be found here: UK Data Service.

Users can be involved in the development of this statistical series by completing this short 5 minute survey. We are keen to receive as many views on this as possible. Alternatively, you can email us at National Travel Survey statistics. Any feedback provided will help inform the future design and development of this statistical release.
