National Statistics on motoring offences and breath tests, released by the Ministry of Justice and produced in accordance with arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The annual release, presented on a calendar year basis, covers the number of motoring offences and breath tests dealt with by the police action (fixed penalty notices, written warnings and vehicle defect rectification schemes) and court proceedings by type of offence and police force area in England and Wales. The accompanying volume on offences relating to motor vehicles includes more detailed data at police force area level.

The 2006 release was upated on 3 December 2008 following the revision to England and Wales data covering offences detected by camera and to Durham fixed penalty notices of ‘careless drving and the use of hand-held mobile phone while driving’. The update affected Table D and the associated text commentary on page 2 and paragraph 33 of the bulletin, and Table 20(a) (page 58) of the supplementary tables.

From 2007/08 responsibility for these statistics has passed to the Home Office. They are now published in the annual bulletin Police Powers and Procedures, England and Wales, available on the Home Office website.
