Section 1: Key messages

  • TIFF in the North East in 2021 was £190 million, an increase of £36 million (23%) from 2020.

  • Total crop output in the North East in 2021 was £257 million, an increase of £75 million (41%) from 2020.

  • Total livestock output in the North East in 2021 was £399 million, an increase of £47 million (13%) from 2020.

  • Total intermediate consumption in the North East in 2021 was £459 million, an increase of £71 million (18%) from 2020.

2.1 Overview

  • Total livestock output has made the biggest contribution to outputs and subsidies in the North East in each of the past 6 years, contributing at least 41.6%. In 2021 Total livestock output contributed 45.2% of the £882 million of outputs and subsidies, the 3rd highest proportion of the past 6 years.

  • Direct payments have made up between 15.4% and 19.6% of the total outputs and subsidies in the past 6 years for the North East. In 2021, direct payments made up 15.4% of total outputs and subsidies.

  • Northumberland, and Tyne and Wear had the highest value for outputs and subsidies in the North East in 2021 with a value of £529 million, 60% of the total outputs and subsidies for the North East.

  • The largest crop output in the North East in 2021 was Wheat with a value of £97 million, an increase of £38 million (66%) from 2020.

  • The largest increase in a value in the North East in 2021 was also in Wheat. The second largest increase was in Other crop products, increasing by £15 million (72%) from 2020 to £36 million in 2021.

  • The largest decrease in a value in the North East in 2021, was in Potatoes, decreasing by £2 million (-21%) from 2020 to £6 million in 2021.

  • The largest livestock output in the North East in 2021 was Beef with a value of £110 million, which was an increase of £11 million (11%) from 2020.

  • The largest increase in a value in the North East in 2021 was in Mutton, lamb and goat, increasing by £18 million (20%) from 2020 to £108 million in 2021.

  • All outputs increased in the North East in 2021, but the smallest increase in a value was in Eggs, which increased by £1 million (10%) from 2020 to £12 million in 2021.

3.1 Overview

  • Compensation of employees has made up between 8.7% and 9.7% of the total inputs and costs in the past 6 years for the North East. In 2021, Compensation of employees made up 8.7% of total inputs and costs.

  • The largest intermediate consumption in the North East in 2021 was Animal feed with a value of £141 million, this was an an increase of £30 million (27%) from 2020.

  • The largest value increase in a cost in the North East in 2021 was also in Animal feed. The second largest increase was in Fertilisers and soil improvers which increased by £16 million (67%) from 2020 to £40 million in 2021.

  • The largest value decrease in a cost in the North East in 2021 was in Seeds and planting stock which decreased by £1 million (-3%) from 2020 to £17 million in 2021.
