Section 1: Key messages

  • TIFF in the East of England in 2021 was £865 million, an increase of £200 million (30%) from 2020.

  • Total crop output in the East of England in 2021 was £2,334 million, an increase of £458 million (24%) from 2020.

  • Total livestock output in the East of England in 2021 was £1,179 million, an increase of £31 million (3%) from 2020.

  • Total intermediate consumption in the East of England in 2021 was £2,342 million, an increase of £278 million (13%) from 2020.

2.1 Overview

In 2021 Total crop output contributed 55.3% of the £4,224 million of outputs and subsidies, the 2nd highest proportion of the past 6 years.

  • Direct payments have made up between 7.5% and 9.4% of the total outputs and subsidies in the past 6 years for the East of England. In 2021, direct payments made up 7.5% of total outputs and subsidies.

  • The largest crop output in the East of England in 2021 was Wheat with a value of £680 million, an increase of £255 million (60%) from 2020.

  • The largest increase in a value in the East of England in 2021 was also in Wheat. The second largest increase was in Other crop products, increasing by £83 million (70%) from 2020 to £202 million in 2021.

  • The largest decrease in a value in the East of England in 2021, was in Potatoes, decreasing by £32 million (-17%) from 2020 to £152 million in 2021.

  • The largest intermediate consumption in the East of England in 2021 was Animal feed with a value of £596 million, this was an an increase of £108 million (22%) from 2020.

  • The largest value increase in a cost in the East of England in 2021 was also in Animal feed. The second largest increase was in Fertilisers and soil improvers which increased by £99 million (56%) from 2020 to £278 million in 2021.

  • The largest value decrease in a cost in the East of England in 2021 was in Seeds and planting stock which decreased by £17 million (-9%) from 2020 to £166 million in 2021.
