About this release

This release presents statistics on the number of publicly available electric vehicle charging devices in the UK, broken down by local authority for 1 October 2025. Data is provided by the electric vehicle and charging point platform Zapmap and is correct as at midnight 1 October 2025.

These statistics are released under the ‘official statistics in development’ label. For more information, see the Methodology note.

The next quarterly report is scheduled for release in January 2026.

We welcome feedback on this quarterly publication. If you would like to provide feedback please email evci.stats@dft.gov.uk.

Headline Figures

As of 1 October 2025, there were 86,021 public electric vehicle charging devices in the UK.

Charging power:

  • 17,356 had 50kW of power or above, this represents 20% of all charging devices
  • 47,882 were in the lowest power rating banding, 3kW up to 8kW, which represents 56% of all charging devices

Location:

  • 41,390 were designated as ‘destination’ chargers, this represents 48% of all charging devices
  • 32,981 were designated as ‘on street’ chargers, this represents 38% of all charging devices

Compared to 1 October 2024, 12 months previously:

  • there are 15,979 more devices, an increase of 23%

UK growth in public charging devices

Table 01a and Table 01b provide a breakdown of public charging devices in each local authority in the UK whilst Table 03 shows the change in the number of devices since 2015. These tables are published alongside this report.

Chart 1: Public charging devices in the UK, midnight, 1 of month, since 2015 (table 03)

Chart 1 is a bar chart showing the consistent growth in total public charging devices since July 2015. Compared to 1 October 2024, total installed devices increased by 15,979, an increase of 23%.

Chart 2: Public higher powered charging devices in the UK, midnight, 1 of month, since 2015 (table 03)

Chart 2 is a bar chart showing the consistent growth in higher powered devices since July 2015. As of 1 October 2025, there were 17,356 charging devices rated 50kW and above, this accounted for 20% of all charging devices.

Due to the change in power rating categories in October 2023, a break in the time series was introduced and this chart should be interpreted with caution. It shows the number of 25kW and above devices (previously referred to as ‘rapid or above devices’) in each quarter up to October 2023. October 2023 onwards displays the number of 50kW and above devices.

Charging device power ratings

Charging devices are grouped into power rating bandings by government and industry and are used in this statistical release series. Devices in higher power rating bandings can charge vehicles at quicker speeds. The power rating bandings are: 3 kilowatts (kW) up to 8kW, 8kW to 49kW, 50kW to 149kW and 150kW and above.

Chart 3: Public charging devices by charging power 1 October 2025 (table 04)

Chart 3 is a doughnut chart showing that:

  • the lowest power rating banding, 3kW up to 8kW, accounted for the largest proportion of charging devices, with 56% of charging devices
  • devices rated 8kW to 49kW represented 24% of charging devices
  • devices rated 50kW to 149kW represented 9% of charging devices
  • the highest power rating banding, 150kW and above, accounted for 11% of charging devices

Location of charging devices

Charging devices are grouped into location categories based on the facility they are located in, who can access this, and the charging service they are designed to provide.

On street charging devices are located on residential streets only.

En route charging devices are located for charging to continue a journey. Located in motorway service areas, service stations, electric forecourts and ferry terminals, as well as 50kW and above charging devices in hotels and restaurants.

Destination charging devices are located at the end of a journey or where a driver may typically stop for an extended period of time. Located in retail car parks, car parks, leisure, education areas and transport, in addition to devices rated 49kW and below at hotels and restaurants.

Other charging devices are semi-public with some level of access restrictions such as workplace car parks and dealership forecourts.

Chart 4: Public charging devices by location of charging device 1 October 2025 (table 05)

Chart 4 is a doughnut chart showing the proportion of charging devices across location categories.

  • The most common location category was ‘destination’ with 48% of charging devices
  • The second most common location category was ‘on street’, with 38% of charging devices

Further information can be found in Annex B.

Regional distribution of charging devices

There is an uneven geographical distribution in total charging devices across the UK. This distribution is more evenly spread for charging devices rated 50kW and above, but some regional disparities remain.

Chart 5: Public charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 October 2025 (table 02a)

Chart 5 is a bar chart showing the variation in total device provision across each region and country of the UK.

London had a much higher level of charging provision per 100,000 of population than any other part of the UK, with 301 devices per 100,000. In comparison, the average provision in the UK was 127 per 100,000.

Northern Ireland had the lowest level of charging device provision in the UK, with 39 devices per 100,000, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber with 76 devices per 100,000.

Chart 6: Public 50kW and above charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 October 2025 (table 02b)

Chart 6 is a bar chart showing the variation in 50kW and above device provision across each region and country of the UK.

Scotland had the highest rate of 50kW and above device provision at 37.0 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. The average provision in the UK was 25.7 per 100,000.

50kW and above charging device provision was lowest in Northern Ireland with 10.8 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. Most other regions have far more comparable 50kW or above device provision per 100,000 population.

Despite having a much higher number of total charging devices per 100,000 population than the rest of the UK, London was the region with the second lowest number of 50kW and above rated devices with 16.5 per 100,000. This is because most of London’s charging provision is devices rated 3kW up to 8kW located on residential streets.

Regional change in charging devices

The following tables present the net change in the number of devices in each region or country of the UK in the past year.

The comparisons in these tables are drawn between two snapshots of the source data taken a year apart. These statistics therefore show net changes in the number of devices between these snapshots: the number of devices added to the data minus the number of devices removed (for example, when devices are decommissioned) each year.

This should not be interpreted as the exact number of installations and decommissions in the past year. This table should be interpreted alongside the latest estimates of regional device provision per 100,000 of the population in Annex A.

Table 1: Regional change in the number of public electric vehicle charging devices from 1 October 2024 to 1 October 2025

UK country or region Total devices change percent Total devices change
South East 27.2% 2,272
Yorkshire and the Humber 25.8% 861
Wales 25.7% 780
West Midlands 25.6% 1,560
East of England 25.0% 1,278
Scotland 22.5% 1,349
North West 22.4% 1,074
South West 22.4% 1,123
London 21.7% 4,759
North East 17.6% 403
Northern Ireland 15.5% 99
East Midlands 12.2% 421

Table 1 shows the change across the UK in the number of charging devices in the past year. South East had the greatest percentage increase at 27.2%. London had the greatest increase in absolute number of devices at 4,759 devices. The smallest increase was in East Midlands, at 12.2%.

Rural or Urban Classification (England only)

This release includes the number of total charging devices (table 06a) and the number of 50kW and above charging devices (table 06b) in England by rural or urban classification in table format.

Chart 7: Proportion of public charging devices available by rural or urban classification in England, 1 October 2025

Chart 7 is a treemap showing the breakdown of charging devices in England according to rural or urban classification. In England, 84.5% of public charging devices were in an urban setting. This is consistent with the proportion of the population living in urban areas.

Full rural and urban classification breakdowns including for 50kW and above charging devices can be found in tables 6a and 6b published alongside this report.

Parliamentary Constituencies

The total number of charging devices and the number of 50kW and above charging devices for each parliamentary constituency are published in (table 07a) and (table 07b) respectively. New parliamentary constituency boundaries were introduced in the July 2024 UK General Election. As a result, data from October 2024 onwards covers charging devices by parliamentary constituency according to the new boundaries.
