Electric vehicle public charging infrastructure statistics: January 2025

Published 5 February 2025

About this release

This release presents statistics on the number of publicly available electric vehicle charging devices in the UK, broken down by local authority for October to December 2024. Data is provided by the electric vehicle and charging point platform Zapmap and is correct as at midnight 1 January 2025.

Data for July to September 2024 was scheduled for publication 30 October 2024, but was postponed in response to an error identified in the data. This was to allow further investigation of the data as part of quality assuring our statistics.

This issue has now been addressed and the error was in the data feed of a single chargepoint operator who work with our data supplier Zapmap.  Two issues were identified, which have now been resolved:

  • removal of fleet (non-public) charging devices which were erroneously included – up to 130 cases

  • a modification in the way that charging devices are calculated – up to 120 cases

The result of this fix affects less than 0.4% of the total UK number (a maximum of 250 devices, although the exact number is not known).  Only data for Scotland was affected.

Given the delay in publishing these data and the scheduled release of the subsequent January 2025 data, the Department has decided to publish both quarters of data, covering July to September and October to December 2024, in this release. This is in order to meet its obligations under the Code of Practice for Statistics to publish data as soon as possible to prevent delay to users. This edition of Electric Vehicle Public Charging Infrastructure Statistics therefore supersedes the July to October 2024 release however all data related to that period is published as normal in the tables accompanying this release.

These statistics are released under the ‘official statistics in development’ label, formerly called experimental statistics. For more information, see the Methodology note.

The timeline of this publication series includes periods of coronavirus (COVID-19) related restrictions. As such, figures in this release may be affected and should be interpreted with caution.

The next quarterly report is scheduled for release in April 2025.

Charging device speed categories changed in October 2023. The new categories are 3 kilowatts (kW) up to 8kW, 8kW to 49kW, 50kW to 149kW and 150kW and above.

Due to this change in speed categories, please interpret timeseries data with caution.

We welcome feedback on this quarterly publication. If you would like to provide feedback please email evci.stats@dft.gov.uk.

Due to the change in speed categories in October 2023, this timeseries is broken and should be interpreted with caution. This chart shows the number of 25kW and above devices (previously referred to as ‘rapid or above devices’) in each quarter up to October 2023. October 2023 onwards displays the number of 50kW and above devices. As of 1 January 2025, there were 14,448 50kW and above public charging devices, this accounted for 20% of all charging devices.

Speed of charging devices

Chart 3: Public charging devices by charging speed 1 January 2025 (table 04)

Chart 3 is a doughnut chart showing the proportion of charging devices across speed categories. The largest speed category was 3kW up to 8kW, which accounted for 41,678 (57%) of all charging devices. The smallest speed category was 150kW plus, which accounted for 10% (7,011) of all charging devices.

Location of charging devices

Chart 4: Public charging devices by destination of charging device 1 January 2025 (table 05)

Chart 4 is a doughnut chart showing the proportion of charging devices across location categories. The most common location category for charging devices was ‘destination’ accounting for 35,995 charging devices or 49% of all publicly available charging devices. ‘On street’ charging devices accounted for 36% of charging devices or 26,318. Further information can be found in Annex B.

Charging device location categories are defined based on the facility they are located in, who can access this, and the charging service they are designed to provide:

On street Charging devices located on residential streets only.

En route Charging devices located for charging to continue a journey. Located in motorway service areas, service stations, electric forecourts and ferry terminals. Additionally 50kW and above charging devices in hotels and restaurants.

Destination Charging devices located at the end of an Electric Vehicle journey or where a driver may typically stop for an extended period of time. Consists of both 50kW and above and 49kW and below charging devices located in retail car parks, car parks, leisure, education areas and transport, in addition 49kW and below charging devices located at hotels and restaurants.

Other Charging devices which are semi-public with some level of access restrictions such as workplace car parks and dealership forecourts.

Regional distribution of charging devices

There is an uneven geographical distribution of charging devices within the UK. Some local authorities have bid for government funding for charging devices, and others have not. Most of the provision of this infrastructure has been market-led, with individual charging networks and other businesses (such as hotels) choosing where to install devices.

Chart 5: Public charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 January 2025 (table ECVD_02a)

Chart 5 is a bar chart showing the variation in total device provision across each region and country of the UK. London had the highest level of charging provision per 100,000 of population, with 250 devices per 100,000. Per 100,000 population figures for London are much higher than the rest of the UK. In comparison, the average provision in the UK was 108 per 100,000.

Northern Ireland had the lowest level of charging device provision in the UK, with 36 devices per 100,000, followed by the North West and Yorkshire and the Humber, each with 66 devices per 100,000.

Chart 6: Public 50kW and above charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 January 2025 (table ECVD_02b)

Chart 6 is a bar chart showing the variation in 50kW and above device provision across each region and country of the UK. Scotland had the highest rate of 50kW and above device provision at 29 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. The average provision in the UK was 21.4 per 100,000.

50kW and above charging device provision was lowest in Northern Ireland with 8.6 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000.

Despite having a much higher number of total charging devices per 100,000 population than the rest of the UK, London was the region with the second lowest number of 50kW and above rated devices with 15.1 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. This is because most of London’s charging provision is devices rated 3kW up to 8kW located on residential streets.

Maps 1 and 2: Total and 50kW and above public charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK region 1 January 2025

Maps 1 and 2 are maps of the UK displaying the geographic variation in charging devices, with the number of devices labelled on each area of the map corresponding to a UK region or country.

An interactive map of this data is available and breaks device provision down further to local authority level.

The numbers displayed in Maps 1 and 2 can be found in table format in Annex A.

Quarterly change in public charging devices

Maps 3 and 4: Change in public charging devices, per region between October to December 2024; percentage and (number of devices)

The total number of charging devices increased in all countries and regions of the UK between October to December 2024.

Map 3 is a map of the UK that shows the percentage change in the number of total charging devices between October to December 2024. The North East had the greatest percentage increase at 12.5%. The South East had the greatest increase in absolute number of devices at 706 devices. The smallest percentage increase was 1.3% in London.

Map 4 is a map of the UK that shows the percentage change in the number of 50kW and above devices between October to December 2024. Yorkshire and the Humber had the largest percentage increase at 11.4%, an increase of 109 devices rated 50kW and above. There was no growth in the North East.

Take caution comparing figures for Scotland in Appendix C and the tables that accompany this report due to an error in October’s data for Scotland. Please see Note 14 in the data tables for further information.

Please note that this data represents available devices at a snapshot in time. Although an increase between two points in time likely reflects new installations, increases occur when devices are added to the dataset, which is not always the same as when they were installed. Decommissioned charging devices are also removed from the total number of devices. An increase in devices therefore reflects the net increase between the two snapshots of data in that period rather than the number of installations in that period. For more information please see the methodology note that accompanies this release series.

The change in charging device numbers displayed in Maps 3 and 4 can be found in table format in Annex C.

Rural Urban Classification (England only)

From October 2023, this release has included the number of total charging devices (table ECVD_06a) and the number of 50kW and above charging devices (table ECVD_06b) in England by rural urban classification in table format.

Chart 7: Proportion of public charging devices available by rural urban classification in England, 1 January 2025

Chart 7 is a treemap showing the breakdown of charging devices in England according to rural or urban classification. In England, 84.6% of public charging devices were in an urban setting.

The urban classification with the largest proportion of charging devices was urban major conurbation (47.8% of all devices). The rural classification with the largest proportion of charging devices was rural village and dispersed (7.7% of all devices).

Between January 2024 and January 2025, the number of charging devices located in urban areas increased by 35%, or 14,021 devices. The number of charging devices located in rural areas increased by 45%, or 2,974 devices.

Further rural urban classification breakdowns including for 50kW and above charging devices can be found in the tables published alongside this report.

Parliamentary Constituencies

From October 2023 we have published the number of total charging devices (table ECVD_07a) and the number of 50kW and above charging devices (table ECVD_07b) by parliamentary constituency in table format. New parliamentary constituency boundaries were introduced in the July 2024 UK General Election. As a result, data from October 2024 onwards covers charging devices by parliamentary constituency according to the new boundaries.
