- there was an increase in the total number of public charging devices in most countries and regions of the UK, with small decreases in the North East and Northern Ireland
Compared to 1 April 2024, 12 months previously:
- there are 16,837 more devices, an increase of 28%
UK growth in public charging devices
Table 01a and Table 01b provide a breakdown of public charging devices in each local authority in the UK whilst Table 03 shows the change in the number of devices since 2015. These tables are published alongside this report.
Chart 1: Public charging devices in the UK, midnight, 1 of month, since 2015 (table 03)
Chart 1 is a bar chart showing the consistent growth in total public charging devices since April 2015. Compared to 1 April 2024, total installed devices increased by 16,837, an increase of 28%.
Chart 2: Public higher powered charging devices in the UK, midnight, 1 of month, since 2015 (table 03)
Chart 2 is a bar chart showing the consistent growth in higher powered devices since April 2015. As of 1 April 2025, there were 15,446 public charging devices rated 50kW and above, this accounted for 20% of all charging devices.
Due to the change in speed categories in October 2023, a break in the time series was introduced and this chart should be interpreted with caution. It shows the number of 25kW and above devices (previously referred to as ‘rapid or above devices’) in each quarter up to October 2023. October 2023 onwards displays the number of 50kW and above devices.
Speed of charging devices
Charging devices are grouped into power rating bandings by government and industry and are used in this statistical release series. Devices in higher power rating bandings can charge vehicles at quicker speeds. The power rating bandings are: 3 kilowatts (kW) up to 8kW, 8kW to 49kW, 50kW to 149kW and 150kW and above.
Chart 3: Public charging devices by charging speed 1 April 2025 (table 04)
Chart 3 is a doughnut chart showing that:
- the lowest power rating banding, 3kW up to 8kW, accounted for the largest proportion of charging devices, with 56% of charging devices
- devices rated 8kW to 49kW represented 24% of charging devices
- devices rated 50kW to 149kW represented 10% of charging devices
- the highest power rating banding, 150kW plus, accounted for 10% of charging devices
Location of charging devices
Charging devices are grouped into location categories based on the facility they are located in, who can access this, and the charging service they are designed to provide.
On street charging devices are located on residential streets only.
En route charging devices are located for charging to continue a journey. Located in motorway service areas, service stations, electric forecourts and ferry terminals. Additionally 50kW and above charging devices in hotels and restaurants.
Destination charging devices are located at the end of a journey or where a driver may typically stop for an extended period of time. Located in retail car parks, car parks, leisure, education areas and transport, in addition to devices rated 49kW and below at hotels and restaurants.
Other charging devices are semi-public with some level of access restrictions such as workplace car parks and dealership forecourts.
Chart 4: Public charging devices by location of charging device 1 April 2025 (table 05)
Chart 4 is a doughnut chart showing the proportion of charging devices across location categories. The most common location category for charging devices was ‘destination’ accounting for 37,435 charging devices or 49% of all publicly available charging devices. ‘On street’ charging devices accounted for 37% of charging devices or 28,316. Further information can be found in Annex B.
Regional distribution of charging devices
There is an uneven geographical distribution in total charging devices across the UK. This distribution is more evenly spread for charging devices rated 50kW and above, but some regional disparities remain.
Some local authorities have bid for government funding for charging devices, and others have not. Most of the provision of this infrastructure has been market-led, with individual charging networks and other businesses (such as hotels) choosing where to install devices.
Chart 5: Public charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 April 2025 (table ECVD_02a)
Chart 5 is a bar chart showing the variation in total device provision across each region and country of the UK.
London had a much higher level of charging provision per 100,000 of population than any other part of the UK, with 263 devices per 100,000. In comparison, the average provision in the UK was 113 per 100,000.
Northern Ireland had the lowest level of charging device provision in the UK, with 35 devices per 100,000, followed by Yorkshire and the Humber with 66 devices per 100,000.
Chart 6: Public 50kW and above charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK country and region: 1 April 2025 (table ECVD_02b)
Chart 6 is a bar chart showing the variation in 50kW and above device provision across each region and country of the UK.
Scotland had the highest rate of 50kW and above device provision at 34 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. The average provision in the UK was 22.9 per 100,000.
50kW and above charging device provision was lowest in Northern Ireland with 9.9 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. Most other regions have far more comparable 50kW or above device provision per 100,000 population.
Despite having a much higher number of total charging devices per 100,000 population than the rest of the UK, London was the region with the second lowest number of 50kW and above rated devices with 15.4 charging devices rated 50kW and above per 100,000. This is because most of London’s charging provision is devices rated 3kW up to 8kW located on residential streets.
Maps 1 and 2: Total and 50kW and above public charging devices per 100,000 of population by UK region 1 April 2025
Maps 1 and 2 are maps of the UK displaying the geographic variation in charging devices, with the number of devices labelled on each area of the map corresponding to a UK region or country.
An interactive map of this data is available and breaks device provision down further to local authority level.
The values displayed in Maps 1 and 2 can be found in table format in Annex A.
Quarterly change in public charging devices
The following maps present the net change between the number of devices recorded in the current and previous quarter. The quarterly change in the number of devices in an area can fluctuate for a number of reasons and should be considered in the context of long term trends.
Maps 3 and 4: Change in public charging devices, per region between 1 January to 1 April 2025; percentage and (number of devices)
Map 3 is a map of the UK that shows the percentage change in the number of total charging devices between 1 January to 1 April 2025. Scotland had the greatest percentage increase at 9.2%. London had the greatest increase in absolute number of devices at 1,084 devices. There was a decrease of 1.2% in the North East and Northern Ireland. There was almost no growth in the East Midlands.
The decrease in devices in the North East since the previous quarter is due to a chargepoint operator changing the mechanism for how they report their data to Zapmap. A number of devices were added to the data between October and December, inflating the total increase in the region to 12.5% in the previous release. This was subsequently followed by a similar number of devices being removed from the same chargepoint operator’s data feed, reverting the number of devices back down and causing the 1.2% decrease seen in this release.
Map 4 is a map of the UK that shows the percentage change in the number of 50kW and above devices between 1 January to 1 April 2025. Scotland had the largest percentage increase at 17.4%, an increase of 275 devices rated 50kW and above. There was a 0.2% decrease in the East Midlands.
Please note that this data represents available devices at a snapshot in time. Although an increase between two points in time likely reflects new installations, increases occur when devices are added to the dataset, which is not always the same as when they were installed. Decommissioned charging devices are also removed from the total number of devices. An increase in devices therefore reflects the net increase between the two snapshots of data in that period rather than the number of installations in that period. A decrease in devices often means more devices were decommissioned than were added to the network. For more information please see the methodology note that accompanies this release series.
The change in charging device values displayed in Maps 3 and 4 can be found in table format in Annex C.
Rural Urban Classification (England only)
This release includes the number of total charging devices (table ECVD_06a) and the number of 50kW and above charging devices (table ECVD_06b) in England by rural urban classification in table format.
Chart 7: Proportion of public charging devices available by rural urban classification in England, 1 April 2025
Chart 7 is a treemap showing the breakdown of charging devices in England according to rural or urban classification. In England, 84.3% of public charging devices were in an urban setting.
The urban classification with the largest proportion of charging devices was urban major conurbation (47.9% of all devices). The rural classification with the largest proportion of charging devices was rural village and dispersed (7.9% of all devices).
Further rural urban classification breakdowns including for 50kW and above charging devices can be found in the tables published alongside this report.
Parliamentary Constituencies
From October 2023 we have published the number of total charging devices (table ECVD_07a) and the number of 50kW and above charging devices (table ECVD_07b) by parliamentary constituency in table format. New parliamentary constituency boundaries were introduced in the July 2024 UK General Election. As a result, data from October 2024 onwards covers charging devices by parliamentary constituency according to the new boundaries.
