Details

Seafarer statistics are compiled annually from certification data held by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and data collected via the UK Chamber of Shipping manpower survey. Figures for 2017 relate to numbers at the end of June. Further details of the coverage of the statistics, uses and limitations can be found in the statistical release.

In 2017:

  • an estimated 23,760 UK seafarers were active at sea
  • just over half the total active at sea were officers (10,600 certificated and 1,500 uncertificated)
  • there were 1,830 officer cadets in training
  • the majority of UK seafarers active at sea were male (including 97% of certificated officers)

Following user feedback, we have made some changes to the presentation of these statistics and accompanying data tables, including additional information on non-UK seafarers working in the UK shipping industry.

We continuously review the content to ensure they are meeting users’ needs. The maritime statistics team would welcome any feedback on these statistics.
