Road length statistics for Great Britain.

The total road length for 2016 was estimated to be:

  • 246,500 miles
  • 600 miles greater than in 2015, an increase of less than 0.3%
  • 6,000 miles greater than in 1996, an increase of 2.5%

By road type:

  • major roads accounted for 12.7% of total road length
  • minor roads accounted for 87.3% of total road length

in Great Britain in 2016.

Statistics on road length do not reflect alterations to the width or number of lanes on sections of road. For an indication of upgrades or improvements of this kind being completed on the Strategic Road Network in England, please refer to separately published statistics in Table RDE0104.
