Statistics on the condition of roads in England, as well as other aspects of highways maintenance for 2016.
The data comes from multiple sources including Highways England, local authorities, and Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). Some data from local authorities form part of the Single Data List, making the provision of data a mandatory requirement.
In the financial year ending 2016, local authorities reported 3% of the principal ‘A’ road network in England should have been considered for maintenance, 1 percentage point lower than in the financial year ending 2015. This is the lowest level since data were first collected in the financial year ending 2008.
For trunk motorway and trunk ‘A’ roads, the proportions of the network that should have been considered for maintenance in the financial year ending 2016 were 3% and 4% respectively. The figure reported for motorways was the same as the financial year ending 2015, while for trunk ‘A’ roads this decreased by 1 percentage point.
In the financial year ending 2016, 7.4% of the principal ‘A’ road network across England received maintenance treatment. Over the same period, 4.1% of the minor road network (‘B’, ‘C’ and Unclassified roads) received maintenance treatment.
