This is the quarterly 2018 Q2 criminal courts publication, and the statistics here focus on key trends in case volume and progression through the criminal court system in England and Wales, including statistics on the use of language interpreter and translation services in courts and tribunals. There is also information concerning the enforcement of financial penalties in England and Wales.
There is a new table in the publication; additional age-group breakdowns for juror summons (as pre-announced last quarter). This is a guest chapter and will continue to be published as part of future annual publications, therefore the tables are looking at 2017 annual figures in line with jurors summons tables published in the previous quarter.
The Crown Court information release is published as management information on the Courts and Tribunals Judiciary website.
Criminal courts
- In magistrates’ courts, receipts decreased by 1% between Q1 2018 and Q2 2018, whilst disposals decreased by 2%. Overall in 2018 Q2, disposals were higher than receipts which resulted in the number of outstanding cases decreasing by 1% from 291,700 in Q1 2018 to 288,000 at the end of Q2 2018.
- In the Crown Court both receipts and disposals fell during Q2 2018, by 3% and 5% respectively from Q1 2018. Disposals remained higher than receipts in Q2 2018, continuing to drive the decrease in outstanding cases to 34,300 at the end of Q2 2018, the lowest number in the quarterly time-series.
- In Q2 2018, the proportion of effective trials in the Crown Court for all offences was 51%. A trial is classified as effective once a jury has been sworn in, regardless of whether they go on to reach a verdict.
- Average hearing times for all trial cases have increased from 5.6 hours in Q1 2018 to 7.0 hours in Q2 2018. This data tends to be revised downwards by an average of 1.7 days when updated in future quarters,
- For cases completing in the Crown Court the average number of days from first listing at the magistrates’ court to completion in the Crown Court increased from 176 days in Q1 2018 to 177 days in Q2 2018 and has been fairly stable since the start of 2017.
- Total financial impositions have decreased by 3% in Q2 2018, mostly driven by a 23% decrease in compensations.
Use of language interpreter and translation services
- The success rate for completed language interpreter and translation service requests decreased slightly from 98% in Q1 2018 to 97% in Q2 2018.
- The complaint rate remained at 1%.
