Uzbekistan: names

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about names in Uzbekistan.

Names in Uzbekistan consist of a:

  • family name
  • personal forename
  • patronymic name (father’s name)

Change of name

Name changes are allowed in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan: nationality

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about nationality in Uzbekistan.

Dual nationality is illegal in Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan nationality can be reacquired if lost.

Uzbekistan: legitimacy and parental responsibility

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about legitimacy and parental responsibility in Uzbekistan.

Legitimacy

Uzbekistan recognises a difference between legitimate and illegitimate births. A child will be considered:

  • legitimate if:
    • the parents are married at the time of the birth
    • the parents marry after the birth and the father is named on the birth certificate
  • illegitimate if:
    • the parents never marry
    • the parents marry but the father is not named on the birth certificate

Parental responsibility

Both parents have parental responsibility for their child in Uzbekistan.

Religious marriages are allowed in Uzbekistan. A religious marriage will only be recognised as legal if it is registered with the state through a civil ceremony.

Uzbekistan: documents

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about documents in Uzbekistan.

Birth certificates

All births in Uzbekistan must be registered at a Civil Registry Office within 1 month of the birth. Late registration is possible.

Birth records in Uzbekistan are held centrally, and birth certificates are issued to parents when they leave the maternity home.

If an error is identified on a birth certificate, the registrar will issue a corrected certificate and destroy the old one.

Gender is not included on the birth certificate.

A court order is needed to add the father’s details to a birth certificate if he was not originally included.

There is more than one type of birth certificate in circulation in Uzbekistan, including those issued by the Soviet Union.

Hospitals birth notification records must show the mother’s name.

Marriage certificates

All marriages in Uzbekistan must be registered at a civil registry office (ZAGS) to be legally recognised.

A marriage certificate is issued when the marriage is registered.

There is more than on type of marriage certificate in circulation in Uzbekistan, including older documents issued by the Soviet Union.

Death certificates

All deaths in Uzbekistan must be registered at a Civil Registry Office within 3 days of the date of death. Late registration is possible.

Uzbekistan authorities maintain a central register of deaths and issue death certificates for all deaths. Only authorised third parties can get a copy of a death certificate.

The deceased cannot be buried without a death certificate.

There is more than one type of death certificate in circulation in Uzbekistan.

Identity documents

Since 1 January 2023, Uzbekistan introduced mandatory identity cards for all Uzbekistan citizens. This identity card replaces the Uzbekistan biometric passport and is valid for 10 years from date of issue.

The identity card confirms the holder’s identity and citizenship.
