Uruguay: names

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about names in Uruguay.

Naming conventions exist in Uruguay. Names in Uruguay consist of:

  • forename

  • father’s first surname

  • mother’s first surname

Surnames can be inverted on request, but it is not possible to remove any part of the surname.

Change of name

Names changes are allowed in Uruguay. Names can be changed through marriage, affidavit or statutory declaration.
