The evaluation of the Adult Skills ‘Upskill in Cyber’ pilot was carried out by Ecorys and Perspective Economics for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), formerly commissioned by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

HMG previously contracted SANS to deliver the Cyber Security Adult Training pilot, marketed as Upskill in Cyber.

The programme aimed to identify and rapidly upskill individuals for roles in cyber security, with students undertaking two SANS training courses (SEC275: Foundations and SEC401: Security Essentials) and receiving soft skills development. The focus of this intervention is to provide proof of principle that the talent pool for cyber security (which is currently limited and not diverse) can be grown through targeted intervention that brings individuals to a defined and easy-to-communicate aptitude. The programme opened for applications on 30 May 2022 and ran as a ten-week, virtual programme.

The research was conducted until November 2022 and therefore does not take into account more recent developments. Since producing this report, responsibility for Cyber has moved to DSIT.
