Mowi Scotland Limited

Location: Fort William, Scotland

Award amount: £2,030,700.95

Summary

Defra has awarded £2 million to Mowi Scotland Limited to buy equipment that will rapidly process fish and improve despatching of their premium salmon. This is part of a wider project to expand and modernise their aquaculture processing facility.

The project will:

  • Increase throughput from 65,000 tonnes to at least 95,000 tonnes per year.
  • Reduce the number of single use polystyrene boxes by 40% by 2026. This is a substantial contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of this product.
  • Introduce automation to reduce manual labour, contributing to the health, safety and wellbeing of employees on the site.

HSH Cold Stores Limited

Location: Grimsby, England

Award amount: £5,000,000.00

Summary

Defra has awarded £5 million to HSH Cold Stores Limited as part of a £33 million 32,700 pallet-space cold storage and logistics project.

Due to a lack of major cold-storage expansion in the area, some processors in Grimsby are reliant on cold storage in Peterborough and the Midlands. The Hub will positively impact the supply chain by keeping costs to local food production and transport down which also reduces fuel consumption.

The project will:

  • Enable a 70% reduction of the energy per pallet space of existing cold storage facilities.
  • Directly provide over 60 new full-time high-quality jobs and enable expansion of the seafood processing sector.

Denholm Seafoods Limited

Location: Peterhead, Scotland

Award amount: £2,915,685.60

Summary

Defra has awarded £2.9 million to Denholm Seafoods Limited to install six state-of-the-art automatic plate freezers, five packing machines, a strapper, palletiser and wrapper. This is part of a £30 million strategic development to increase production and freezing throughput of premium quality mackerel and herring landed at Peterhead.

The project will:

  • Increase the processing and production capability of mackerel by five tonnes per annum.
  • Increase freezing and packing throughput capability by 340 tonnes (74%) per day to 800 tonnes per day.
  • Increase on-site cold storage to stop the transfer of fish to and from Dundee, removing a total of 11,322 miles or energy wastage of 10,972 kwh.

The project will:

  • Expand JCS Fish Limited’s salmon and trout processing capability from its current 10 tonnes to 20 tonnes per day.
  • Create an estimated 32 direct jobs and 80 indirect jobs in a deprived region
  • Make energy savings in the region of 30% despite it being a larger site, this equates to a 30-40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Reduce UK’s reliance on imported salmon.

Shoreham Port

Location: Shoreham, England

Award amount: £532,912.86

Summary

Defra has awarded over £500,000 to transform the Dry Dock into a modern facility to provide essential maintenance services to the local fishing fleet for future generations. When the project has been completed, Shoreham Port will be able to complete repairs so that vessels do not have to travel to Scotland or the Netherlands, reducing maintenance time and loss of earnings as a result

The project will:

  • Reduce maintenance time for the fishing fleet in Shoreham.
  • Increase the safety and environmental performance of the Dry Dock by removing or replacing end-of-life assets and undertaking repairs. This will improve safety and ensure the Dry Dock is accessible for vessel crews, owners and their contractors.
  • Create a total power efficiency saving of 65%.

Falfish Limited

The project will:

  • Increase the processing capability to 184 tonnes per day of high quality individually quick-frozen sardines and other pelagic species.
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 1,062 tonnes per annum.
