Joint statement between the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology of the United Kingdom on framework for semiconductor cooperation.
1. This year marks 140 years of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom (UK) and the Republic of Korea (RoK). We are delighted to have launched the Downing Street Accord: A UK-RoK Global Strategic Partnership, which marks this important occasion and sets out ambitious commitments to deepen bilateral cooperation across shared science and technology priorities, in particular regarding semiconductors.
2. The UK and RoK are at the forefront of semiconductor research and industrial application. We recognise the importance of advancing leading-edge semiconductor capabilities for long term security and prosperity. And, we recognise the need for international collaboration, to further strengthen the resilience of global semiconductor supply chains.
3. We are pleased to announce that the UK Government Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and the Republic of Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) have signed a new Framework for Semiconductor Cooperation. This Framework is an opportunity to build on the longstanding history of collaboration between our countries.
4. The Framework reflects both countries’ commitment to draw on our respective strengths, amplify our leadership in multilateral fora, deepen our industry and academic links, and facilitate exciting new research and industry collaborations. Through the Framework, we will:
a. Deepen collaboration in the development of advanced semiconductor skills
b. Support collaborative research and development projects, including by strengthening links between our academic and research institutions
c. Enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation on semiconductor supply chain resilience
d. Identify and facilitate opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation activities between our respective industries.
