UK Innovation Diffusion and Adoption Survey 2024: privacy notice

This notice sets out how we will process your personal data, and your rights. It is made under Articles 13 and/or 14 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
For the purposes of the UK GDPR, DSIT is the controller for the personal information we process under UK GDPR, unless otherwise stated.
Your data
Participation in the survey is voluntary. Questions relating to personal data are optional and can be left unanswered.
We will process the following personal data:
- Individual respondents’ names
- Email addresses
When provided, we may use your data for the following purposes:
- To contact you to discuss your response
- To invite you for an in-depth interview
- For recruitment to future research relating to innovation, adoption, or diffusion.
Purpose
We are collecting evidence on innovation adoption and diffusion (IDA) to create a better evidence base for policy decision-making in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and other relevant government departments.
The purpose of this survey is to collect information to inform policy development and to understand the impact of government policy on innovation adoption and diffusion. This will further support policy development to better support the adoption and diffusion of new and existing technologies across the UK. All information collected as part of this project will be used for research purposes and forming an evidence base for better policy decision-making.
DSIT have contracted PA Consulting (PA) to deliver the survey.
Under no circumstances will the collected survey data or any matched data be used to profile firms, or to influence individual funding decisions.
Legal basis of processing
The legal basis for processing your personal data under Article 6 of the UK GDPR is:
Recipients
Your personal data will be collected directly by DSIT’s delivery partner, PA Consulting (PA), who will collect and analyse this data on DSIT’s behalf as a data processor.
As part of our IT infrastructure, your personal data will be stored on systems provided by our data processors - Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. This does not mean we actively share your personal data with these entities; rather, they are technical service providers who host infrastructure supporting our IT systems.
You may receive an invitation to participate from Gov.Notify. In this instance, your contact details will have been uploaded to the government communications platform. Information on how Gov.Notify handle your personal data can be found here - https://www.notifications.service.gov.uk/privacy.
Retention
Your personal data within responses will be kept by DSIT for 5 years from the end of survey fieldwork.
Where applicable, your contact details will be stored on GOV.UK Notify for 4 months from the date of contact.
Automated decision making
Your personal data will not be subject to automated decision making.
International Transfers
The departments use of data processors means that your personal data may be processed at data centres outside of the UK, but will remain within the European Economic Area (EEA). Your data will receive the same level of protection in the EEA as it does in the UK, through the safeguard of Adequacy Decisions.
Your rights
You have the right:
- to request information about how your personal data are processed, and to request a copy of that personal data.
- to request that any inaccuracies in your personal data are rectified without delay.
- to request that any incomplete personal data are completed, including by means of a supplementary statement.
- to request that your personal data are erased if there is no longer a justification for them to be processed.
- in certain circumstances (for example, where accuracy is contested) to request that the processing of your personal data is restricted.
- to object to the processing of your personal data.
