Medical Employment Standards help ensure that people joining the UK Armed Forces are medically able to meet the demands of military service. Unlike most civilian jobs, military personnel may be required to work in challenging, hazardous, and unpredictable environments, often with limited access to medical care. The standards are designed to protect both the individual and their colleagues by ensuring that existing medical conditions do not place anyone at increased risk during training, operations, or deployment.

The standards set out the minimum medical requirements for entry into the Armed Forces. They apply to both Regular and Reserve service. They provide clear guidance on which medical conditions are compatible with service, and which may prevent entry. The document is organised by body system, making it easier for candidates, healthcare professionals, and recruiting staff to understand how different medical conditions are assessed.

Medical Employment Standards are regularly reviewed to ensure they remain evidence-based, fair, and appropriate for the needs of Defence. As medical knowledge, treatments, and military requirements evolve, the standards are updated to reflect current best practice and operational demands.
