Get a welfare assessment of sheep and goat ear tags

How sheep and goat ear tag manufacturers and suppliers get a welfare assessment of ear tags, and what’s required in the assessment.

Documents

Details

The 3-month ear tag welfare assessment is the second stage of the process for manufacturers and suppliers to get ear tags approved.

Once the Livestock Unique Identification Service (LUIS) support team tells you that you can move to live welfare trials, you must get a welfare assessment at 2 farms. The welfare assessment must be supervised by a vet.

You must pay for any costs related to the assessment.

What happens next

At the end of the assessment, the vet will send you a welfare assessment report.

You need to send this report to:

LUIS Section
Rural Payments Agency
Curwen Road
Workington
CA14 2DD

Email: luis@livestockinformation.org.uk

The LUIS support team will check the results with the Animal and Plant Agency (APHA) vet.

If the LUIS support team is satisfied with the results of the welfare assessment, they will tell you to send your tags for Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) testing.

Do not send the tags for PAS testing until the LUIS support team tells you to, or you may have to pay extra costs.
