Research background
This report was commissioned as part of research and evaluation activities to develop a robust evidence base to inform the development and delivery of the Department’s Additional Work Coach Support.
Contribution to the evidence base
This report promotes understanding of DWP health journey customers’ experience of receiving additional support from a work coach. Specifically, the research focused on:
-
how the support offer was communicated to claimants, and what their expectations and goals were for the support
-
claimants’ experience of receiving the additional support in practice
-
the extent to which claimants felt comfortable discussing their health condition, and other barriers to work, with their work coach
-
the types of support offered by work coaches, and how this was viewed by claimants including whether this was appropriately personalised to support needs
-
qualitative evidence of outcomes around confidence, motivation, wellbeing and attitudes towards work as well as movement towards or into employment
Recent ad hoc analyses also report positive impact on employment outcomes for customer groups (limited capability for work and work-related activity and work related activity group, LCWRA and WRAG, respectively). These can be found at:
Research value
The Department will use these findings, alongside the wider evaluation and evidence base to improve our services and design DWP’s future employment support.
