Approved equipment for the testing of tachographs

1. Introduction
This guide sets out the equipment approved by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to test tachographs.
You must make sure all electronic equipment you have for tachograph calibration work has the latest software installed. You’ll be told about the latest software versions by special notices.
DVSA does not accept any liability for any damage to test equipment caused by connecting equipment from different manufacturers.
2. Vehicle testing equipment (roller test rig)
Conventional tachograph calibration rollers are free running rollers, the vehicle transmission is used to drive the rollers at high speeds for calibration work.
Roller brake test (RBT) rollers are permanently engaged to the drive gearbox, the rollers are used to drive the vehicle’s transmission at slow speed for calibration work.

3. Tachograph instrument portable drive testing unit
A tester for mechanical tachographs must be available in all centres.
The following are suitable for mechanical and electronic tachographs when used with a suitable pulse adaptor. Only those detailed in the description column are suitable for use with Motometer EGK 100 tachographs.
Some of the programmers listed below have a pre-programmed ‘test chart’ facility, whilst not strictly in accord with Section 9.5 number 2 Tachograph Head Bench Test is fully acceptable.

6. Turns counter for use with linear track
All centres are required to have the equipment available to measure the turns of a gearbox.
Alternatively, any pulse counter listed in section 8 may be used in conjunction with a normal electronic tachograph sender unit.
The result in pulses/ km must be divided by the number of poles in the sender unit to convert to rev/ km.
