Tajikistan: names

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about names in Tajikistan.

Names in Tajikistan consist of:

  • family name
  • personal forename
  • patronymic name (father’s personal name with a male or female ending depending on the child’s gender)

There are male and female names in Tajikistan. Male surnames end in ‘ov’ and female surnames end in ‘a’.

There may be spelling differences in a customer’s name when it is translated to English. For example:

  • ‘j’ may show as ‘dzh’ or ‘zh’
  • ‘h’ may show as ‘kh’ or ‘h’

Change of name

Name changes are allowed in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan: nationality

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about nationality in Tajikistan.

Dual nationality is not allowed in Tajikistan unless the customer’s other nationality is Russian.

A person can reacquire Tajikistan citizenship if it has been lost.

Tajikistan: legitimacy and parental responsibility

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about legitimacy and parental responsibility in Tajikistan.

Legitimacy

Tajikistan does not recognise a difference between legitimate or illegitimate births. This means a child is born legitimate whether the parents are married or not.

Parental responsibility

Both parents have parental responsibility in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan: adoption

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about adoption in Tajikistan.

Adoption is legal in Tajikistan.

Foreign nationals are not allowed to adopt unless one of the couples is a Tajikistan national.

Tajikistan: gender recognition

Transgender citizens are not recognised in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan: civil partnerships and marriage

Civil partnerships and same sex marriage are not recognised in Tajikistan.

Civil and religious marriages are allowed. Only marriages registered as a civil marriage are considered legal.

Polygamous marriages are not legally recognised in Tajikistan.

Tajikistan: documents

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about documents in Tajikistan.

Birth certificates

All births in Tajikistan must be registered within 90 days of the birth. Late registration is allowed when approved by the Ministry of Justice.

Birth certificates are issued when the birth is registered.

Birth records in Tajikistan are held centrally.

Hospitals retain birth notifications records and these show both parents’ names.

Marriage certificates

The registrar will issue an official marriage certificate. There is only one official version of a marriage certificate.

Death certificates

Tajikistan authorities maintain a central register of all deaths. Deaths are registered on the day of the event.
