Departments have confirmed that, where applicable, they have fully complied with the guidance when procuring steel for their major projects.

Steel procurement pipeline

We are also publishing an update of the Steel procurement pipeline 2017, to show future steel requirements for national infrastructure projects.

The Steel Pipeline shows how the government plans to use over 3 million tonnes of steel, worth around £0.5 billion, over the next decade on infrastructure projects such as:

  • High Speed 2 (HS2)
  • the construction of Hinkley Point C
  • the maintenance and upgrading of the UK’s motorway network

In December 2017, we published independent research that identified high value market opportunities for UK steel producers, worth up to £3.8 billion a year by 2030. We are encouraging the UK steel sector to invest in their capacity and capability to enable them to grasp these opportunities.
