Request

Reading in special educational needs (SEN) schools. I am interested in the level that special educational needs children are reaching in reading and literacy; in terms of whether they are reaching the expected national curriculum level, and how many have either acquired or not acquired literacy skills.

Release

This information is available from the national curriculum assessments section.

If you download the national tables, the information required should be in Table 5, which shows that:

  • 6% of pupils in state-funded special schools achieved level 4 or above at key stage 2 reading
  • 4% of pupils in state-funded special schools achieved level 4 or above in key stage 2 English
  • 3% of pupils in state-funded special schools achieved level 4 or above in key stage 2 writing

Please note that most children with special educational needs are educated at mainstream schools, not at special schools.
