Quick start guide

Published 6 October 2026

1. Where do I find opportunities?

Most Home Office opportunities are advertised through:

  • find a Tender
  • The Central Digital Platform (CDP)
  • Government Commercial Agency (GCA) frameworks, catalogues and dynamic markets
  • Pipeline Notices and Preliminary Market Engagement Notices

Top tip: Register on CDP and set up alerts before opportunities are published.

2. What do I need in place before I bid?

Before bidding, make sure you have:

  • organisation registration details
  • VAT and banking information
  • core policies (GDPR, Equality, Health & Safety, Safeguarding)
  • relevant insurance
  • recent financial information
  • case studies and references
  • any required accreditations such as Cyber Essentials

You do not need to be a large organisation, but you do need to show that you can deliver safely and reliably.

Read more: “Are You Ready to Bid?” and Insurance sections. Complete Bid Preparation Checklist.

3. How do I decide whether to bid?

Ask yourself:

  • is this work aligned to what we do well?
  • do we have the people and capacity?
  • can we meet the requirements?
  • can we deliver profitably and sustainably?
  • do we understand the risks?

Remember: Not every opportunity will be right for you.

Strong suppliers know when to walk away.

4. What will the Home Office score?

Home Office evaluators score:

  • how well you answer the question
  • evidence and case studies
  • your delivery approach
  • value for money
  • social value
  • risk management

Evaluators score what is written, not what they assume.

Evidence beats promises.

5. What documents should I prepare now?

Create a simple “bid library” containing:

  • accounts and financial information
  • insurance certificates
  • core policies
  • case studies
  • social value examples
  • environmental information
  • cyber security evidence
  • staff CVs and organisation profiles

Preparing these early can save significant time when opportunities arise.

6. What are the biggest mistakes to avoid?

Common reasons bids fail include:

  • bidding for opportunities that are a poor fit
  • missing deadlines
  • ignoring word limits
  • making unsupported claims
  • using generic, copy-and-paste responses
  • leaving compliance requirements until the final week
  • failing to ask clarification questions

7. Who can I ask for help?

Useful sources of support include:

  • Home Office SME mailbox
  • Government Commercial Agency supplier events
  • Federation of Small Businesses (FSB)
  • National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO)
  • Social Enterprise UK
  • Enterprise Nation
