Sizewell C Limited: application made to abstract water

Sizewell C Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is to vary licence serial number AN/035/0003/016 which authorises the abstraction of water from underground strata (sand and gravel deposits – crag formation) at National Grid Reference TM 46012 64982 at Leiston, Suffolk.

The variation applied for is:

  • To increase the annual limit from 101,495 cubic metres a year to 219,000 cubic metres per year.

Further details are:

  • The hourly (25 cubic metres per hour) and daily (600 cubic metres per day) rates on the licence and the licence expiry date of 31st March 2027 will not be changed.

  • The existing licence is facilitated by a trade agreement with three existing licences located in the same hydrometric area as this proposal. This trade agreement will remain in place, with the annual limit part-facilitated by this agreement.

  • Abstraction will continue to be authorised to take place all year.

  • The water will continue to be used for process water and dust suppression.
