0.1 Detail

The Rt Hon Greg Clark, Minister Of State for Cabinet Office (Cities and Constitution), will visit Singapore 31 May – 3 June. He last visited in September 2013 as Financial Secretary and that programme had a heavy cities focus which this one will follow up on.

World Cities Summit

Mr Clark will attend the World Cities Summit (WCS) hosted by the Singapore government which is preceded by a Mayors Forum, feature around 120 mayors and key leaders of international organisations, captains of industry and other thought leaders who will consider urbanisation and its challenges. Both events will explore challenges around creating liveable and sustainable cities. A Ministers’ Forum will also address infrastructure development in the Asia Pacific region. On Monday 2 June he will give a keynote speech at the opening plenary of the WCS itself as well as attend a number of the other sessions.

Green Growth & Business Forum

On Tuesday 3 June, Mr Clark will deliver a keynote address to open a Green Growth & Business Forum, highlighting the economic and business benefits of low carbon growth. The event has been organised by High Commission’s Climate Change and Energy team and the Singapore government and will feature senior policymakers, business leaders and researchers from the UK and the region. Lee Yi Shyan, Senior Minister of State in the Ministries of Trade and Industry and National Development (and whom Mr Clark met here in September) will also speak at the opening. At the end of the first day, Mr Clark will attend a reception at the residence for the delegates. The forum will continue for a second day focusing on the role of government in setting the right policy framework and direction for business as well as the importance of collaboration to deliver results on the ground.

Supporting UK business

At both events, and over lunch on the Monday, Mr Clark will have a chance to meet many of the UK companies based here who working on various Singapore urban development projects, including our HVO campaigns on rail and ports. He will also meet those who are here to exhibit at Singapore International Water Week (deliberately organised by the Singaporeans to dovetail with the World Cities Summit).

Finally, there will be media opportunities to highlight UK expertise and capabilities, as well as the scope for UK/Singapore partnership, across both the smart cities and green growth agendas.
