Shoreham Adur tidal walls scheme: reaches W1, W2, W3 and W4

Updated 15 December 2017

W1: Shoreham Fort

Shoreham Fort to the Sailing Club

Along this reach, a new steel sheet-pile wall was built along the rear of the beach in front of the existing walls from the fort to the sailing club. This wall is protected by a new rock revetment.

The existing slipway was removed and a replacement raised slipway constructed to the north. New steps were built to allow public access to the beach.

At Shoreham Fort, there is now new public access to the beach, and improvements have been made to the car park.

Shoreham Sailing Club to Shoreham Harbour Club

A new steel sheet-pile wall with concrete capping was built in front of the harbour club. Construction on this section started in November 2017.

W2: Emerald Quay to South Wharf

At Emerald Quay, the existing capping wall was extended to accommodate flood glass panels. In the marina, 2 flood gates were installed to provide access for boat users. Emerald Quay slipway was raised and extended.

At South Wharf, a 400mm concrete wall was added to the existing capping.

Construction in this reach started in spring 2017.

No works took place at Sussex Wharf because the defences already met the required standard of protection.

W3: Riverside Road

At this reach, a new steel sheet-pile wall was built riverward of the existing defences. The sheet piles were capped with reinforced concrete and brick cladding.

Construction in this reach started in spring 2017.

W4: Adur Ferry Bridge

In this reach, a new steel sheet-pile wall was built along the riverbank in front of the existing walls. The wall has been brick clad with flint insets to enhance the view to the historic town centre across the river.

A new ramp will be installed to improve access to the adjacent Riverbank Reach.

A small population of slowworms was moved away from the area to protect them during the construction works.

Work started in this reach in 2016.

The path between the Adur Ferry Bridge and the houseboats was reopened to the public on 8 December 2017.
