River Rother, Sheffield: decision of designation change

Published 7 November 2016

This notice was withdrawn on

The appeal period has ended and the proposed changes to the main river map have been made.

After a period of consultation, the Environment Agency has decided to reduce the length of the River Rother at Sheffield, South Yorkshire that is designated as a ‘main river’. The Environment Agency is making this change as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the main river map.

The determination is that the River Rother between national grid reference (NGR) SK 44556 84163 and NGR SK 43632 85233, which is shown as an deletion on the main river consultation map, is no longer to be treated as part of a main river.

The change will mean that Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council will have the power to carry out work to manage flood risk from this part of the watercourse. The Environment Agency will no longer have this power.

If you wish to carry out works in or next to the watercourse, you may have to get consent from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.
