Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union

This statement is being made for the purposes of section 13(4) of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 and outlines how the Government intends to proceed in the light of the House of Commons’ vote on 19 October 2019 on a motion under s.13(1) of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018. This motion sought the approval of the House of Commons for the revised agreement reached between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union.

Following the vote, as required by the European Union (Withdrawal) (No.2) Act 2019, an extension to the Article 50(3) period has been sought and agreed with the European Council to 11pm on 31 January 2020, with opportunities to leave the EU earlier, on 30 November and 31 December 2019.

The Government has no plans to have further negotiations and the European Council decision on the extension excludes any re-opening of the Withdrawal Agreement.

On 29 October 2019, the Government introduced the Early Parliamentary General Election Bill, to allow for a general election on 12 December 2019. The Early Parliamentary General Election Act 2019 received Royal Assent on 31 October 2019.
