This project developed a series of surveys and assessments to add information about the landscapes of the river, floodplain and catchment to river habitat surveys. This will widen the range of information used to understand the status of rivers.
Understanding how landscapes affect, and are shaped by, water is integral to how the River Habitat Survey (RHS) is carried out and how it contributes to flood risk management. This project examined the possibility to extend the survey approach to use more detailed or targeted landscape information.
This project consisted of two phases. In phase 1, field and desk research was used to explain the concepts involved and set the boundaries for what should be included. Phase 2 further refined these approaches, providing updated field survey data based on testing the method on a series of sites across Great Britain.
This project ran from 2002 to 2005.
