Reducing flood risk in Abingdon

The Environment Agency is working with the Vale of White Horse District Council to develop potential schemes to reduce flood risk in Abingdon.

The Abingdon project team has now finished building the new wall at St Helen’s Mill in Abingdon that will significantly reduce the flood risk of the 5 ground-floor flats there, which have been flooded frequently over the last few years. This work, and future flood prevention work in Abingdon, are possible thanks to funding from the Vale of White Horse District Council.

The project team has been working with the Vale of White Horse District Council to investigate 2 other potential flood risk management schemes to reduce the risk of flooding to people and properties in Abingdon: Hillview Road Culvert on the River Stert and a much larger scheme for the River Ock.

Unfortunately a feasible scheme for the Hillview Road culvert can’t be found, as the options investigated would not produce significant benefits.

The project team has updated the hydraulic models for the scheme on the River Ock and is using models to investigate which option or options will have a flood risk reduction benefit in Abingdon. Several projects have been investigated to reduce flood risk including a flood storage area, permanent flood defences, modifying weirs and natural flood management such as land-use change. Once the project team has the results of the modelling it will continue to work with the Abingdon community.

There was also an initial assessment to explore whether there is a viable scheme to reduce flood risk for Swift Ditch, also known as the Abingdon backwater. No viable scheme was identified.
