Fraudulent emails

We have received reports from businesses about fraudulent emails falsely claiming to be from regulated legal professionals including solicitors and barristers. These scam messages may misuse the names and contact details of unconnected registered solicitors. The messages may include their Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (SRA) number to promote bogus ‘services’ and give an air of legitimacy to their activities. Their communications may also falsely suggest they have an affiliation with the IPO.

Suggested action you can take

Impersonating a solicitor is a criminal offence. We are urging anyone targeted to report this to the police via Action Fraud, or your local Trading Standards office. After obtaining an Action Fraud reference number, you can also report a summary to the SRA. The SRA also provides helpful guidance on identifying bogus law firms and responding to identity theft.

If you are unsure and would like further guidance or receive any other unsolicited IP related communication, please contact us at misleadingmail@ipo.gov.uk.
