Radio spectrum (spectrum) refers to the range of invisible electromagnetic waves that enable all wireless technology, from:
- mobile phones
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices
to aircraft navigation, satellite and military applications, among many others. Spectrum also has an enabling role to play in addressing major upcoming policy challenges, including in:
- space-based science
- defence applications and enabling resilient
- reliable clean energy supplies
About the public sector spectrum framework
This new cross-government framework will promote efficient use of spectrum across Crown users of spectrum, while supporting pro-growth commercial applications where possible.
This framework will drive growth through supporting increased spectrum access and innovation in both public and private sector spectrum use. It will also improve the performance and productivity of government by maximising the efficiency of Crown spectrum use.
Our primary goals in developing this framework are to:
1. ensure that Crown spectrum users have access to the spectrum needed to support strategic government priorities and deliver critical services
2. take advantage of opportunities to maximise spectrum value and support growth by sharing spectrum with civil applications, wherever possible and appropriate.
Our intention is to establish an enduring framework with a focus on periodic reviews of Crown spectrum demand - reviewed alongside inputs from Ofcom on areas where there is demand for spectrum access from civil users - and innovative approaches to enabling shared use of spectrum.
