Protecting IP rights using the IPO Intelligence Hub

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) intelligence hub (intel hub) was established in January 2008 to support enforcement activities relating to pirated and counterfeit goods. The intel hub works with partner agencies as well as other government departments to reduce IP infringement and the supply of counterfeit goods to the UK.

The intel hub acts as the UK’s central point for collecting, analysing and disseminating intellectual property (IP) intelligence. The hub supports law enforcement investigations, placing the right information in the hands of the right people at the right time. The hub also provides the link between the rights holders and various law enforcement agencies.

Where does the intelligence hub get its information?

The intel hub manages the National IP Crime Intelligence Database (IPID) and receives information from sources such as:

  • industry
  • Trading Standards
  • Police
  • HM Revenue & Customs
  • Border Force

The intel hub follows the National Intelligence Model (NIM) guidelines and national codes of practice for intelligence collection, storage and dissemination.

What work does the hub undertake?

The intel hub team comprises of researchers, intelligence officers and analysts. It has Accredited Financial Investigators to undertake money laundering investigations related to IP crime under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. The staff are often deployed to support enforcement activities across the UK, including at borders and other ports of entry.
