Allied health professionals (AHPs) play a crucial role in preventing worklessness and promoting return to work through holistic, person-centred approaches.

Work is a primary determinant of health: good work is protective of health, while unemployment and poor-quality jobs contribute significantly to poor health outcomes and health inequalities. Clinical leaders have a duty to bring focus to the opportunities to support people to access, remain in and return to good work as part of clinical services.

This guidance has been co-developed with AHPs, professional bodies and expert advisers for use by AHP leaders in organisations, systems and regions. It is intended to support AHP leaders to confidently advise, advocate and take action on the topic of work and health. This guide focuses on 3 aspects where leaders can support change:

  • understanding and influencing the wider system related to work and health
  • supporting the whole workforce to understand their role in work and health
  • optimising AHP input to work and health specific services
