Details

This prison service instruction (PSI) contains guidelines for prisons on running a physical education (PE) programme. It explains how prisoners should have access to a safe and varied programme of physical activities to:

  • help them stay physically and mentally fit in custody
  • help ensure that they are fit to work and take part in prison activities

It covers:

  • understanding the minimum legal requirements of a PE programme
  • creating a PE programme to meet the diverse needs of a prison population
  • managing risks and maintaining a safe and secure PE programme

This is a current PSI. It came into effect on 1 October 2011.
