Pension Credit Journeys: A report by Verian

Details

Research background

This report discusses the findings of the Pension Credit Journeys research carried out by Verian on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The research was commissioned to support the Department’s efforts to increase Pension Credit take-up, through building its understanding of the Pension Credit applicant and recipient journey.

The objectives of the research were to provide insight into the reasons why people do and do not apply for Pension Credit and to understand people’s experiences of applying for and receiving Pension Credit.

Contribution to the evidence base

Research commissioned in 2012 by the DWP examined the barriers to claiming Pension Credit. Research commissioned in 2011 by the DWP investigated the triggers that give rise to Pension Credit claims.

This research, commissioned by the DWP, adds to previous findings, providing up to date information on the views and experiences of people receiving Pension Credit and of potentially entitled non-recipients of Pension Credit. The findings will be considered alongside those from a recent trial testing targeted communications for eligible pensioners not receiving Pension Credit.

Research value

The research provides insight into the factors which influence pensioners’ decision to apply or not apply for Pension Credit, and experiences of the Pension Credit application process. It will complement existing insight to inform future campaign strategies to increase Pension Credit take-up.
