1. Request

Following a Freedom of Information request for an Ofsted pre-registration advice note we are publishing the advice notes for all 2012 openers.

2. Release

Under the Education and Skills Act 2008, an Ofsted pre-registration inspection is required to inform the Secretary of State’s decision whether to register an institution as an independent school.

Following the pre-registration inspection, the Ofsted inspector produces an advice note for the department. In the interests of transparency the department is publishing the Ofsted Advice Notes for the free schools that opened in 2012. They are available to download from this page.

No new school is allowed to open unless it is completely ready to provide a high-quality education, in a safe environment.

Ofsted was clear that all of the free schools it inspected in the weeks prior to opening were ready, subject to a few conditions in some cases. The department made sure that all of the conditions were fully met by the schools before they opened in September.
