Notices to exporters 2023/10: court judgement on CAAT legal challenge

Published 19 June 2023

On 06 June 2023 the High Court handed down its judgement dismissing Campaign Against Arms Trade’s challenge to the government’s decision to restart licensing of military exports to Saudi Arabia for possible use in the conflict in Yemen.

We welcome the court’s judgement. The government takes its export responsibilities seriously and assesses all export licences in accordance with strict licensing criteria. We will not issue any export licences where to do so would be inconsistent with these criteria.

We will continue to rigorously assess applications for Saudi Arabia for possible use in the conflict in Yemen against the revised methodology we put in place to comply with the Court of Appeal judgement, which considers whether there is a clear risk the equipment might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of International Humanitarian Law.
