- governing bodies and their representatives
In November 2025, the Department for Education confirmed that the national school breakfast programme (NSBP) would end in July 2026. All eligible schools on the NSBP have been offered a place on the free breakfast club programme to start in September 2026.
As the free breakfast club programme is for primary-age pupils only, NSBP secondary schools are not eligible to join, and so will be provided with a grant for the academic year 2026 to 2027 to enable them to continue to provide breakfast food to their pupils at no cost to them or their parents.
The NSBP secondary school support grant 2026 to 2027 funding methodology sets out the methodology that underpins this grant funding commencing from autumn 2026.
Grant conditions will be published shortly.
This guidance will help schools and local authorities understand how the grant is calculated for September 2026 to August 2027 academic year.
