Details

It is illegal to feed potentially infectious material (mammalian protein, meat and bone meal) to farmed animals, horses and fish. This feed ban is in place to prevent disease, particularly bovine spongiform encephalopthy (BSE).

To assess the effectiveness of the feed ban controls, a national feed audit is carried out which inspects and samples various stages of the animal feed chain.

These monthly and yearly statistics provide a summary of the audit checks. They include data on:

  • documented inspections
  • sampling and testing of feed materials and compound feeding stuffs for processed animal proteins
  • prohibited processed animal proteins found in samples of feeding stuffs intended for farmed animals

Reports from previous years are available on the archived AHVLA web pages on the National Archive website.
